OPHTHALMOLOGY
Dr. Berryman has over 37 years of experience in diagnosis, surgery, and treatment of eye disorders in dogs and cats. He uses many diagnostic methods to provide both indirect and direct ophthalmologic examinations including slit lamps, gonioscopy, tonometry, fluorescein and Rose Bengel stains, and Schirmer tear test.
Common Eye Diseases
Common eye diseases diagnosed and treated medically and surgically by Dr. Berryman include glaucoma, cataracts (juvenile and senile), eyelid abnormalities, corneal diseases and ulcerations, cancers both in and around the eye, pannus, and dermoid
Cataracts
A specific examination of your dog or cat will help determine the success or cataract surgery. A series of eye drops are used for 10 days to prepare the eye for surgery and prevent post-operative infection. After surgery, there will be a series of checkups to follow the healing process. Usually it is only necessary to remove the cataract from one eye to allow the pet enough vision to function normally. If the owner requests the second eye is done, a determination by the doctor will be made as to when that is most feasible. Eye drops will be used post-surgically in all cases to ensure the healthy recovery and maintenance of the eye.
Eyelid abnormalities
Specific breeds of dogs are prone to abnormal development of their eyelids. Consequently, it may be necessary to have reconstructive surgery performed to allow the animal to have unobstructed, pain free vision. These surgeries are done routinely at our clinic. |
